Phase Transfer Catalysts

Tetrabutyl Ammonium Iodide

TBAI — quaternary ammonium iodide catalyst for enhanced nucleophilic substitutions and cross-coupling.

Tetrabutyl ammonium iodide (TBAI) is a quaternary ammonium phase transfer catalyst that combines the phase-shuttling capabilities of the tetrabutylammonium cation with the nucleophilic catalytic enhancement of the iodide anion. In substitution reactions, catalytic TBAI in situ generates reactive alkyl iodides from less reactive alkyl chlorides or bromides, dramatically speeding up reactions.
